Description:
Abstract:
Stooke created a second mosaic using Viking data (originally produced by Cornell University by Simonelli et al., 1993), which was reprojected to match the DLR control. Low resolution, image gaps and some bad seams in the original DLR mosaic make this reprojection only an approximate match to the DLR geometry. This new mosaic was created by compiling new versions of the original Viking high resolution mosaics, and selecting the best high resolution images from the other spacecraft, so that an entirely new mosaic could be constructed. In the process of compiling the mosaic, some areas poorly controlled in the old mosaic were significantly improved (e.g. near 40 north, 220 west longitude, where only very oblique Viking images were available but Mars Express provides a near-vertical view). The Cornell mosaic was enlarged to 14400 by 7200 pixels to accommodate higher resolution images. In each area the best available images were reprojected and combined. Where images with reverse lighting meet, artistic effects are necessary to create a satisfactory appearance, but this affects only the appearance and not the map geometry. Purpose:
To produce a DLR-controlled image mosaic of Phobos using Viking Oribter high-resolution images.
